Estimation Station

Today we learned how to use a KNOWN amount to figure an UNKNOWN amount. We were not allowed to use a ruler to solve any of our problems. Yesterday we used basketballs to find the area of our classroom floor and today we used unsharpened pencils to figure out the perimeter of our desk and our math book. How COOL is that?

CHALLENGE PROBLEM

Every Monday a new Challenge Problem will be given to the class. It is due on Friday of that week. Parents are encouraged to work on these problems with their child. Some problems will be a lot harder than others.

A fragile item is to be shipped in a cardboard box. In order to prevent the item from hitting against the walls of the box, plastic foam cubes are used as "bumpers". There are ten of these cubes. How can you position them along the inner walls of the box so that there is an equal number of cubes along each wall?

Show your work in some type of chart when solving the problem.
